It has been almost 40 years since I first began to study the ideas of Mao Zedong.  I was working with workers who were trying to improve conditions for working people in my country, the United States of America.  To do this we needed to learn from those who had already been successful in their struggles and one of those was Mao Zedong.  I studied Mao and learned and worked to teach others about his ideas and accomplishments.  Although I knew those accomplishments were many, it really wasn’t until I came to China only five years ago that I understood how great they were.

In the short time I have been in China, I have often been asked “How did the United States develop so quickly?”  My response is always to point out that, in fact, in only 61 years China has developed even faster.  Yes, China is an old country of more than 5000 years but throughout most of that history, China was held back and it was only through the long struggle of the Communist Party of China that 61 years ago Chairman Mao was able to speak to so many people at Tian’anmen Square, across China and around the world and say “The Chinese people have stood up.”  The Chinese people stood up and they are still standing up, standing arm-in-arm and side-by-side with others in the world who work for peaceful progress.

Last winter I spent a month at Spring Festival in the countryside in southern Hubei Province.  I talked with people there about their lives, both today and in the past.  Several times I heard them say “Chairman Mao gave us our country.”  We all know the song “Meiyou Gongchandang jiu meiyou xin Zhong Guo” but I think there is more that must be added.  “Meiyou Gongchandang jiu  meiyou xin Zhong Guo, meiyou Mao zhuxi jiu meiyou Gongchandang.”

Tomorrow is the 117th birthday of Mao Zedong.  He passed away 34 years ago but it is important that his teachings and accomplishments stay alive in our memory and that they guide us to an even better future.  “Long Live Mao Zedong!”  {Mao zhu xi wan sui}
